Founders:
Nick and Sarah Armentrout own and operate Spring Creek Farm and co-founded Equest in 1998. After spending four years in Sun Valley, Idaho instructing students and managing the Sagebrush Equine Training Center for the Handicapped (SETCH), they returned to Maine to start a program of their own.
Sarah Chappell Armentrout is Equest’s Co-founder and full-time Executive Director. She is an Advanced Level NARHA instructor who has taught therapeutic riding since 1994, combining her passion for horses with a desire to serve her community. She trained at The National Center for Equine Facilitated Therapy in California, and was a working student for Peggy Cummings with her Connected Riding methods in Idaho. As Equest's director, Sarah is involved with all levels of fundraising, fiscal management, program development and oversight. Prior to Equest, Sarah directed the Corporate Communications Department at Tom’s of Maine, including the company’s corporate giving program, media relations, and brand messaging and identity.
Nick spent five intensive years as a wrangler and ranch hand in Montana, Wyoming and Idaho and has extensive experience teaching riders with disabilities. Beginning in 1993 as a volunteer, and teaching for many years as a certified instructor, he currently acts as Equest's Communications Director. Prior to Equest, Nick was the Director of Business Development for The Saltwater Institute. Together Nick and Sarah bring a balance of professional training and hands-on experience in many areas of therapeutic riding.
"We loved our time in the West, but when we thought about starting our own therapeutic riding program, we knew we wanted to return to Maine and to the community that supported us during our youth. Equest now gives us the chance to combine our two passions: working with horses and people."
