Participant Safety Equipment & Attire Policy

Since Equest has a varied student base, the following list should be used, as a guideline for what is required and acceptable attire when near or on horses. Equest does maintain a supply of used pants and shoes that can be borrowed for riding.
  • All students must wear a riding helmet when on or around horses. Equest will provide all students with an ASTM-SEI approved riding helmet. Equest has helmets ranging in size XXS – XL. Those students who for medical or personal reasons, wish to use their own helmet must submit it to an Equest staff member for approval and it must bear the ASTM-SEI certified seal.

  • Students should wear long pants when working with horses. Students may choose between denim jeans, sweat pants or a riding breech. For those riders doing developmental vaulting (with pad & surcingle), sweat pants or leggings are the most appropriate. Windpants are discouraged for any type of riding, as they tend to be too slippery. It is suggested that male riders wear

  • Students who utilize stirrups must wear a riding boot or hard shoes with a heel. Those students participating in developmental vaulting (with pad & surcingle) sneakers are encouraged. We realize that for the economically or physically challenged person hard shoes may be an unrealistic option. In those cases Equest does have a limited supply of boots for loan and we encourage students to use them as well as donate your out-grown shoes for the benefit of other students.

  • All saddles are equipped with breakaway safety stirrups to prevent the foot from getting jammed in the stirrup.
