Rider Winter Fitness Program
spacer spacer
Equest offers therapeutic riding programs from April to November each year. However, we recognize that some of our riders may need preparation and readiness work so that they are better able to transition into the spring riding semester. With the addition of the Winter Rider Fitness Program, Equest offers a 6- week program in February and March for teenaged and adult riders with disabilities.

Led by consulting Exercise Physiologist, Chris Dunn and Equest’s Program Director, Sue Grant, the Winter Rider Fitness Program takes place in a private fitness room at the Northern York County YMCA in Biddeford, Maine. The goals of the program are to improve core stability, flexibility and joint range of motion as well as cardiovascular endurance. Expected functional outcomes include better endurance with a posting trot, improved ability to mount and dismount, improved steering ability and improved ability to use seat and legs while riding. Some quotes from past participants:

"My balance with walking is better at a faster gait."

"I am stronger. I can walk outside in the walkway for longer periods of time. I can bend more easily and pick up things from the floor. I can tie my shoe strings easier."

"I have been doing exercises at home and in the gym and my confidence has improved."
